Fifty-five of those were for fires and 122 were for Motor Vehicle Accidents.

The City completed its largest capital works project in history - the Wastewater Lagoon Expansion.

The zamboni at the TG Smith Center flooded the rinks about 3,000 times.

The 2011 total value of all property and improvements in the City was assessed at a market value of over $1.2 billion.

The Steinbach Aquatic Centre taught about 4,198 water safety lessons while also keeping over 72,000 pool patrons safe.

The City's underground water pipe network grew by about 2 km to reach a total of 78.5 km by the end of the year. The sewer pipe network is even larger, reaching a total length of 93.5 km by the end of 2011.

Total financial transactions for the year exceeded $37 million.

The Steinbach Landfill received and handled over 28,000 tonnes of solid waste during the year. This was accomplished by the passage of 30,862 vehicles through the gate. Our tonnage has dropped 13.7% since 2006 which means our community is doing a great job of waste diversion!

The annual Christmas light display on City streets includes 500 strings containing 22,000 light bulbs.

The Parks and Recreation department mowed and maintained 225 acres of green space during the year.

The summer beautification program set up and maintained 350 hanging flower baskets on City streets and tended to another 900 dozen plants and flowers during the year.

The City approved nearly 350 building permits in the year worth over $93.5 million in new construction.
Steinbach's First Solar Crosswalk

The City of Steinbach has begun a pilot project with its first solar crosswalk. The solar crosswalk, located on Loewen Boulevard where Maplewood Street intersects Loewen by Maplewood Manor, was completed Monday.

Mayor Chris Goertzen, together with Bill Unger, a resident of the area, tested out the new crosswalk earlier this week. Unger repeatedly expressed his pleasure at having the safety of this particular crosswalk enhanced as he frequently walks in the area.

Pedestrian safety is important to Council and we are pleased to see this pilot project move forward, said Mayor Goertzen. We believe it will not only be a cost efficient way to implement lit crosswalks, but it may also improve safety at crossings that would have been cost prohibitive to improve. If this project proves successful, I believe Council will look at this new system in various places throughout the city.

Mayor Goertzen Steinbach resident, Bill Unger, use the new solar crosswalk on Loewen Blvd.

This type of crosswalk was considerably easier to install as it did not involve any underground electrical components or major concrete anchors, said Public Works Department Head, Randy Reimer. These particular units have been tested in Canada and have been said to work well in our winter climate.

Reimer also stated that the solar crosswalk could turn out to be a good option for additional areas in town where there are higher traffic volumes.

The crosswalk poles were installed in fall 2011 and the lights were installed at the beginning of this week. Total cost for the crosswalk was $9,500.

Christmas Tree Pick-up

Only a few Christmas trees have already been picked up by the Citys Solid Waste Department, and it is expected that most trees will be ready for pick-up next week.

Eldon Wallman, Solid Waste Department Head, explains that it usually takes about two weeks after December 25th for most of the trees to be out for pick-up. However, the Solid Waste Department continues to pick up trees into the new year as time permits.

Ever wonder what happens to your tree after Christmas?

Wallman explains, We try to keep the trees with our clean wood pile for chipping in spring. We then use the chipped wood, mixed with dirt, as cover material in our active cell at the landfill.

Wallman adds that the wood mulch created from Christmas trees is not suitable for flower beds because of the high acidity of the pine needles.

Snow Clearing Operations and Safety

Winteris here and, although we have not receivedmuch snow yet, it is important toremind residents that they play an important role in snow clearing activities and safety.Public Works clears the snow from city streets and sidewalks as soon as possible after significant snowfall events, and sanding and salting of the streets occurs as conditions warrant. Public Works Department Head, Randy Reimer, notes that the City has priority routes that are cleared first following a snowfall, such as streets and sidewalks by the hospital and seniors homes, but they always try to work as quickly and responsibly as possible.

Here are some of the actions and responsibilities residents can practice to ensure safe and efficient snow removal service:Report icy roads, intersections, or sidewalks to the Public Works Department by calling 346-6211 or e-mail transportation@steinbach.ca.

Residents are required to keep parked vehicles off of all city streets until such time that streets can be cleared.

Do not park on streets that have signage indicating there will be snow removal from the boulevards within the next 24 hours.

Do not park vehicles on driveways in such a way that they block any part of the sidewalk to ensure clear passage for the sidewalk plow.

Truck tractors and trailers (including construction, trade or recreational trailers) should not be parked on a street for longer than two hours, unless the vehicle in question is parked for use by a tradesman working on premises in the immediate area.

Equipment operators need considerable space to maneuver. As a motorist or pedestrian, make sure equipment operators are aware of you prior to crossing behind or near them.

Stay back at least 50 feet from graders and sanding equipment.

Pedestrians and cyclists should wear reflective clothing and ensure they are highly visible to all traffic. Cyclists should always ride in the same direction as traffic. Pedestrians should always walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic.

Wearing earphones or winter headgear can inhibit your hearing or peripheral vision. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings.

Parents should talk to their children about building snow forts and tunnels in or sliding on snow piles in cul de sacs, on boulevards, and any other areas where snow removal takes place. Ensure children know to stay at least 50 feet away from operating equipment.

Property owners are responsible for clearing windrows from driveways as street clearing operations are in progress. The City removes all windrows when snow accumulation warrants.

Snow from private property must be removed from the site or stored on the property. Pushing or depositing snow from private property onto public roadways or sidewalks is not allowed.

The City of Steinbach thanksall residentsfortheir cooperation!
