City of Steinbach

The past year has flown by and left several significant changes in Steinbach. As I reflect on the progress made in 2009, a number of projects come to mind. Our active transportation program has seen the installation and extension of several new sidewalks and regional pathways to provide enhanced activity options for Steinbach residents and visitors. New housing developments have been established and Steinbach’s Industrial Park has been expanded. Part of the City’s Waterworks infrastructure, a large pump house, is being expanded and renewed, and spring 2009 saw the grand opening of the Aquatic Centre’s Splash Park which has already been enjoyed by so many! The City’s Official Community Plan (which was nominated for a provincial planning award) is now in full implementation and the City is currently developing a new Zoning By-Law that will encourage a community of interaction. This type of growth is what keeps our economy strong and Steinbach residents safe and prosperous.

Events in the city are also increasing in both number and size. This past year, Steinbach held its first Summer in the City Festival and it was a huge success! From entertainment for the kids and the diverse cultural food fare to the artisans market and the featured performances by Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, the Festival was enjoyed by all. The second annual Summer in the City Festival in June 2010 promises another weekend full of music, street performances, food, and fun and I look forward to again taking part in this celebration of Steinbach life.

Two other special events which occurred in Steinbach were the Olympic Torch Relay Celebration on January 5, 2010 and the Safeway Curling Championship from February 10-14, 2010.  I feel that Steinbach was chosen to host the Olympic Torch Relay Celebration because our community does an excellent job exemplifying what the Olympic flame stands for… peace and friendship. The Safeway Curling Championship was another great opportunity for people in the Steinbach area to see some high-calibre curling and cheer on their favourite curlers.

2010 hints at more great things for Steinbach and its residents. Plans are in the works to expand the Jake Epp Library, improve recreation facilities, and maintain first-rate infrastructure systems. I encourage you to take part in shaping the community. Council and City staff look forward to hearing from residents to ensure that we give the best service possible to our community. We value your ideas and suggestions for making Steinbach an incredible place to live. Together we can continue to build a city of excellence.

On behalf of all of Steinbach Council and City staff, I would like to wish you and your family all the best in 2010.
