A long-time Steinbach resident, Michael Zwaagstra graduated from Steinbach Regional Secondary School in 1993. Afterwards, he attended the University of Manitoba where he completed his bachelor of education degree. Since August 2000, he has been employed as a teacher with Hanover School Division and currently teaches high school social studies. In 2005, he graduated with his masters degree in educational administration from the University of Manitoba.
Mr. Zwaagstra is active in the community and currently serves as board chair of Steinbach Christian Schools (SBC/SCHS) and is a past member of the HavenGroup board of directors. He attends Evangelical Fellowship Church where he teaches adult Sunday School. He also writes a weekly column in The Carillon called “Think Again.”
In 2010, Mr. Zwaagstra co-authored the book,
What’s Wrong With Our Schools and How We Can Fix Them. His columns promoting common sense education reform have been published in major daily newspapers such as the National Post, Globe and Mail, and Winnipeg Free Press.
On a campaign platform emphasizing fresh ideas and traditional values, Michael was first elected to Steinbach City Council in 2006. He was re-elected to a second term on council in October, 2010.
Michael and his wife Angela have four children, including two foster sons.
