Secure Loads Regulation - Effective July 1, 2011

In accordance with Manitoba’s The Highway Traffic Act (HTA) section 61(2), the City of Steinbach will be enforcing the securing of loads for all vehicles entering or exiting the Steinbach Landfill facility.

HTA section 61(2) states: “No person shall operate, or permit to be operated, upon a highway any motor vehicle or trailer unless the load that the motor vehicle or trailer is carrying is firmly bound, sufficiently covered, or otherwise secured or loaded, in such a manner that no portion of the load may become dislodged or fall from the motor vehicle or trailer” (The Highway Traffic Act).

This provision applies to pickup trucks and/or trailers of any size and is intended to facilitate road safety by eliminating risk of loose and flying debris from unsecured loads. If you are stopped by a law enforcement agency for violating HTA section 61(2), the fine is $231.50.

All bulky loads must be tarped and larger items secured with adequate tie-down straps or rope. Effective July 1, 2011, failure to properly secure loads entering or exiting the Steinbach Landfill will result in a $10 surcharge over and above regular fees. For residents who do not have a tarp to secure their loads, the Landfill will provide 6’ x 8’ tarps and four bungee straps for the price of $10 until July 30, 2011.

Any questions regarding this notice may be directed to the City of Steinbach’s Solid Waste Department Head, Eldon Wallman, at 346-6532 or by e-mail to ewallman@steinbach.ca

    Community Compost Depots

Every Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm, beginning May 14, 2011, until October 8th, the City will have compost depots set up at both the Woodlawn School yard (411 Henry St.) and the Steinbach Junior High School (77 Lumber Ave.) by the track.  Bring your leaves, grass clippings, and other garden cuttings to these depots and help us create the best quality compost for our community!  This material will be composted at the Steinbach Landfill and used in the city's parks and gardens.  The finished compost will also be made available to the public at no charge!

Help us make our community a more beautiful and greener place to live!

    City of Steinbach’s Compost Challenge

The City of Steinbach has developed a environmental challenge for its community.  The purpose of the Compost Challenge program is to decrease the amount of yard/garden and food waste that is being dumped at the Steinbach landfill.  Approximately 45 per cent of the waste in the Steinbach landfill is compostable material.  The City received a grant of $14,700 from the Waste Reduction And Prevention Program (WRAPP) to aid in the success of this program.  On April 25, 2009, the City sold 700 bins in 4 hours!

The Compost Challenge will accomplish the goal of waste reduction through the sale of subsidized compost bins, free compost informational brochures, and free compost workshops offered by the City and the Master Composters in the area.

To register or if you would like to be notified about upcoming compost workshop dates, please e-mail areitsma@steinbach.ca or call 346-6231.

    Landfill Compost Site

A community composting program is implemented at the landfill to help divert compostable yard and garden waste from the other garbage.  Future plans are to expand the compost site to allow kitchen and garden waste.

Items that are accepted into the compost pile:
                          leaves
                          grass clippings
                          clippings from plants & flowers

Items that are NOT accepted into the compost pile:
                          non-organic matter
                          kitchen/food waste
                          branches
                          pine needles

    Proper Battery Disposal

The City asks that you do not throw out batteries with your regular garbage. The Solid Waste Department encourages the public to either hang onto their old batteries until the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day (held at the Steinbach Fire Hall every May) or bring your household batteries to the Landfill, Jake Epp Public Library or The Source in Clearspring Centre. A disposal box is available at the Landfill scale building for several varieties of batteries, including alkaline, rechargeable, cell phone, and power tool batteries. Automotive batteries are collected separately at the Landfill.  Batteries are then returned to the manufacturer for proper disposal and recycling.

Interesting to know, 100% of a battery is recycled! Batteries are sorted based on their chemistry and sent to one of three different facilities in North America. There, the batteries are broken down into their various chemistries using an enclosed high heat process. There are no fumes emitted into the environment, and, once broken down, the chemistries can be used to make new products, including garbage bags and even stainless steel flatware.
