Swimming Lesson Information

PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILDREN’S PROGRESS REPORT FOR THE RECOMMENDED ENROLLMENT LEVEL FOR YOUR CHILD.
Aquatic Centre staff will be happy to evaluate (at no charge) your child for proper level placement.

In Starfish (ages 4 to 12 months), Duck (ages 12 to 24 months), and Sea Turtle (ages 24 to 36 months), the parent or caregiver will participate in the classes together with their child.  Progression is based on participation and age.

Sea Otter (ages 36 months to 5 years) provides a transition where parents gradually leave their preschooler with the Instructor.   Progression is based on skill evaluation and is the starting point for most preschool swimmers.

Salamander, Sunfish, Crocodile, and Whale
(all levels - ages 3 to 5 years)
are un-parented – the children will be with the Instructor at all times.  Progression is based on skill evaluation.

Red Cross Swim Kids
This is a 10-level program for ages 6 and up.
This program for school aged children will help swimmers develop all six swimming strokes (front and back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly, sidestroke), actively learn how to be safe around the water, and increase their fitness and endurance through fun activities. Children will be challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which will be a strong motivator through all 10 levels.  If your child was registered in anything other than Red Cross SwimKids, please call for the correct enrolment level, (204) 346-6207.

Please go over the following before bringing your child to swimming lessons to ensure there are no misunderstandings or delays once you arrive. Thank you!
  • Double-check your receipt to ensure that your child has been registered for the correct level and time.
  • Bring any questions or concerns about lessons immediately to the attention of a Deck Supervisor, so we can address it in a timely manner.
  • Provide the previous report card to the instructor on the first day of classes. It will be returned to you at the end of the session.
  • Ensure that your child does not eat immediately prior to swimming.  A ½ hour break between a light meal and swimming or a 1-hour break between a large meal and swimming is strongly recommended.  Also, please ensure that your child goes to the bathroom prior to attending swimming classes.
  • Children 11 and under must have adult supervision while in the facility. This includes children waiting for lessons. An adult participating in lessons does not qualify for supervision of children in the lobby.
  • Maximum class numbers are strictly adhered to; once a class is full no exceptions will be made.
  • Spectators, please remain on the large green tiles of the viewing area during swimming lessons.
  • We strongly encourage parents to bring their child to public swim and practice several times throughout the session. Each student will receive a booklet and a mid term report which will detail items in their level.

Aquacise Schedule and Information

All aquacise classes are on a first-come, first-served basis.  We accept a maximum number of 25 participants in most classes.

Check out our Mom & Tots Aquacise program.  It's for new moms with tots between 4 - 18 months and it's a great way to get some exercise and meet other new moms!  It runs every Monday and Friday from 9:45 - 10:30 am.

Winter Aquacise Schedule: January 2 - March 25, 2012

7:35 - 8:20 am Tuesdays & Thursdays - Shallow End
9:00 - 9:45 am Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays -
Deep End
9:45 - 10:30 am Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays -
Shallow End
9:45 - 10:30 am Mondays & Fridays - Shallow End
Moms & Tots Aquacise (4-18 months)
8:15 - 9:00 pm Mondays - Deep End
9:00 - 9:45 pm Tuesdays & Thursdays - Deep End

Shallow End:  Through using continuous cardiovascular exercises, we try to maintain a steady, healthy heartbeat.  All of the exercises are arthritis and joint friendly in the water.  During this class we stay in the shallow end of the lap pool, so being a good swimmer is not a requirement.  In fact, you do not need any experience in water to participate.  The class is a light, fun and healthy environment for anybody to participate in.

Deep End:  Using mostly the deep end of the lap pool, (the shallow end will be used at the beginning and end of classes), full body workouts are developed at the participant’s own pace.  You get results from the workout that mirror the intensity put in.  It is truly a customizable full body workout.  Calories are burnt by exercise and laughter.

Note:  Trained Lifeguards teach these classes for motivational purposes.  The staff are not certified fitness instructors.  Please be sure to participate at your ability level and let staff know immediately if you have any abnormal pain or discomfort.  Those with medical conditions, new participants and those adding exercise into their life should seek medical advice prior to participating as there is an inherent risk of injury in any physical activity including this aquacise program.

Swim Basics

Swim Basics is designed for teens and adults who have had little to no experience with the water.  This class will teach you basic swim skills such as floating, gliding, treading water, deep and shallow water movement, diving, as well as basic front and back crawl.

Swim Strokes

Swim Strokes is designed for teens and adults who are comfortable in the water and can perform one or more recognizable Red Cross strokes (i.e. front crawl, breast stroke, etc.).  This class covers a full technical teaching of front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke and side stroke.  Progressions within each stroke mimic that of our Red Cross Swim Kids programs.

Leadership Awards (Instructor/Guard Certifications)

About the Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) course:
30 hour course
Eight hours hands-on teaching experience required after the successful completion of the course.  This is usually done by joining an existing class for 2 – 2 ½ hours per week for 4 weeks.  Depending on class schedules this may take anywhere from 1 – 4 months to complete.  The Instructor/Trainer will then assess the supervising instructors comments to determine the final grade for the AWSI course.  Additional teaching hours may be assigned if deemed necessary by the Instructor/Trainer.

About the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course:
25 hour course
Minimum 12 hours hands-on teaching experience required after the successful completion of the course.  This is usually done by joining an existing class for 2 – 2 ½ hours per week for 6 weeks.  Depending on class schedules this may take anywhere from 1 – 4 months to complete.  The Instructor/Trainer will then assess the supervising instructors comments to determine the final grade for the WSI course.  Additional teaching hours may be assigned if deemed necessary by the Instructor/Trainer.
Please note:  The courses usually run over 2 weekends back-to-back.  With the practice teaching, it generally takes 3-4 months to fully complete each course.

Lifeguard Training and Tuition Reimbursement Program

The City of Steinbach has initiated a new and unique pilot program aimed at helping finance education and lifeguard training. The City of Steinbach will reimburse a portion of Manitoba College, University or Lifeguard training tuition costs for qualified Tuition Reimbursement applicants.

To be eligible for this program staff must be employed at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre in a Lifeguard position on December 31 and have worked a minimum of 520 hours in the application year.

This is not a scholarship or bursary competition. All staff that meet the criteria will be awarded the reimbursement. These amounts will be between $520.00 and $1000.00 per year based on hours worked.

Staff members in high school or wishing to take a year off of school to earn money for tuition may carry the amount earned forward within the guidelines of the program.

Becoming an Instructor/Guard:

Have you ever wondered what is involved in becoming an instructor/guard at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre?   There are many agencies that are involved in this training and certification process.  Some courses may be taken at the same time as long as pre-requisites are met.  Example: Bronze Cross may be taken at the same time as AWSI.

Click on the diagram for a larger version.

It usually takes 18-24 months to go through the certifications process and depends on course and candidate availability.  A criminal record check and a child abuse registry check are conditions of employment.
